  • The dominant paradigm of organization theory based on bureaucracy, open systems, and contingency theory is described with concepts traced to their historical roots. Parallel developments in public administration are also presented. This entry concludes with a consideration of network theories that have emerged in the latter half of the twentieth century as researchers consider groups of organizations rather than individual units
