Today's cover story plotting the international office growth of Allen & Overy (A&O), Clifford Chance, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Linklaters reveals some startling statistics.
A&O has opened 22 offices since 2007. The group of big four firms has opened 55 offices since 2005. And they have barely closed any; Freshfields shut down in Singapore in 2006, Bratislava in 2009 and Barcelona in 2013, but generally the trend has been one of massive international expansion.
But what the data really confirms is the divergence between how these firms are fulfilling their clients' needs for a global platform. A&O and Clifford Chance are largely going it alone, extending their coverage via hires, mergers and relocations.
