    Los viajes de Alexander von Humboldt y Ramón de la Sagra constituyeron dos momentos claves en la producción de un imaginario moderno sobre Cuba y el Caribe. En este ensayo, examino las relaciones que se establecen entre las categorías de viaje, raza y política en sus relatos sobre Cuba. Las maneras en que ambos naturalistas recorren la isla se vinculan a la forma en que la población va a ser leída en función de un proyecto político y racial. La travesía marítima de Humboldt le permite conectar la isla dentro de una cartografía marcada por la cultura de la plantación y la esclavitud, insertando a Cuba dentro de una posible confederación africana en las Antillas. El viaje al interior de Sagra privilegia, en cambio, una perspectiva plegada tierra adentro, centrada en un proyecto de blanqueamiento y colonización. Propongo entonces pensar el viaje como un tropo que organiza los imaginarios raciales de Cuba.

    Humboldt�s and Sagra�s travels constituted two key moments in the production of a modern imaginary about Cuba and the Caribbean. In this essay, I examine the relationship they established between travel, race, and politics in their accounts of Cuba. The ways in which both naturalists tour the island are connected to the ways in which the population will be read. Humboldt�s maritime voyage would allow him to connect the island within a cartography marked by plantation and slave cultures and placing Cuba inside a possible African Confederation in the Antilles. Sagra�s travels through the interior of the island privileges an inland-based perspective centered on a whitening project and the colonization of the interior. I then propose to analyze the journeys as a trope that organizes Cuban racial imaginaries.
