The article reports on the comfort letters issued by the Comesa Competition Commission exempting deals from notifying under Africa's merger clearance rules. Two criteria are considered by the Commission when deciding whether to issue a comfort letter. An explanation is offered on how to make use of the informal notification process. Update on the collaboration of the Commission with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to revise or replace its draft Merger Assessment Guidelines is given.
