    El gran continente africano destaca, sobre todo, por su diversidad. Esto hace que podamos hablar de países florecientes, pero también de zonas de caos y debilidad extrema. Oportunidades y desafíos se mezclan en un continente que cada vez se nos muestra más cercano. Retos a la seguridad como la crisis del ébola, la amenaza del terrorismo y del crimen organizado o los movimientos migratorios ponen a prueba el desarrollo de las poblaciones de los países de origen, pero también de la región circundante y del continente vecino euro-peo. En este contexto España es, para las oportunidades pero también para las amenazas, el puente más claro entre África y la Unión Europea.Con ayuda internacional, mediante iniciativas colectivas como la Unión Africana y sus misiones, o las de la OTAN, la UE o las Naciones Unidas, África está encarando con más eficacia que en años pasados algunos de estos desafíos. Como iniciativa colectiva al desarrollo, es decir, a la seguridad, pues sin uno no hay otra, se analizan de manera específica los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio (ODM) ahora que estamos a las puertas de su revisión y actualización.

    The great African continent stands out for its diversity. Thus, we can speak about flourishing countries but also about zones of chaos and extreme weakness. Challenges and opportunities are mixed in this continent which gets increasingly closer to us. Challenges to safety such as the Ebola crisis, the threat of terrorism and of organized crime, or the migratory movements menace the development of the native population, and that of the surrounding regions and of the European continent. In this context, Spain is the most obvious bridge between Africa and the European Union for opportunities but also for threats.

    Thanks to the international assistance through collective initiatives such as the African Union and its missions, or those led by NATO, the EU, and the UN, Africa is facing up to some of these challenges more effectively than in the past years.

    As a collective initiative for development, in other words, for security, because one cannot exist without the other, the Millennium Development Goals are specifically analyzed in this chapter, at a time when they are on the verge of revision and update.
