In historical, geographical and social terms, the border of the Pyrenees in the Eastern sector was permeable . Aside from the territory of the Cerdagne depression, where orography does not facilitate the political separation, the dividing line is passable by almost a hundred of mountain passages; the maritimal way shall of course be added .
Except the times of international conflict, in the daily life, more than a wall, we can speak of bridge, passage or street. The contraband and the political fights of party benefitted from this. The different degree of economic and cultural development in the two sides of the statal boundary influenced powerfully in the identitary differentiation of the population.

Per la història, la geografia i les relacions socials, la frontera dels Pirineus al sector Oriental ha estat, relativament, permeable. A part del territori de la Cerdanya, on l’orografia no facilita la separació política, la línia divisòria és franquejable per gairebé un centenar de passos de muntanya i existeix també la possibilitat marítima de traspassar-la. Excepte en les èpoques de conflicte internacional, en la pràctica diària, més que d’un mur, podem parlar d’un pont, passadís o carrer. El contraban i les lluites polítiques de partit se’n beneficiaren. En la diferenciació identitària de les poblacions situades a ambdós costats del límit estatal hi influí poderosament el distint grau de desenvolupament econòmic i cultural.
