La conferencia consta de dos partes bien diferenciadas. La primera representa una aproximación al tema de la caracterología colectiva y la relación que ésta guarda con las nociones de "Estado" y de "Nación". Se explica también cómo se produce la tergiversación de esta caracterología propia de cada nación, como consecuencia de las fronteras artificiales que establecen los diferentes estados. A pesar de estas deformaciones, se demuestra también cómo la importancia de este carácter colectivo de cada pueblo es tal, que resulta imposible ignorar su existencia. Y esta afirmación se fundamenta en tres pruebss concretas:1) Porque el primer juicio que se hace de cualquier persona siempre se daen función de su lugar de procedencia.2) Porque la crisis actual de las ideologías políticas demuestra que no hayideología posible sin un previo conocimiento de la psicología de los pueblos.3) Porque todas las definiciones que se han hecho a través de la historiaacerca de lo que es una nación, han tenido que hacer referencia necesariamente a esta forma particular de pensar y de hacer las cosas que distingue a unos pueblos de otros, han tenido que hablar, en definitiva, de su carácter colectivo.La segunda parte de la conferencia constituye, a partir de una serie de entrevistas publicadas por el diario Avui, un análisis del carácter catalán y de las caracteristicas que lo configuran realmente, al margen de los tópicos que a menudo lo falsean y enmascaran. Concretamente son analizados los siete rasgos atribuidos de una forma mayoritaria por los entrevistados a nuestra manera de ser, como respuesta a una de las preguntas de que constaban las entrevistas: ¿Qué características cree que definen mejor la manera de ser catalana?La idea fundamental que se desprende de este trabajo radica en que demuestra cómo la existencia de la caracterología catalana es de una evidencia absoluta. Requiere, sin embargo, un estudio sistemático y profundo para llegar a un conocimiento exacto y objetivo de nuestra manera de ser, que entronque con nuestro pasado, con nuestra historia, pero que nos permita a la vez proyectarnos más eficazmente como nación hacia el futuro.

The conference has two well differentiated parts. The first one is a reference to the collective characterology and how it is related to the notions of "State" and "Nation". It is also explained how the misrepresentation of this characterology specific in each nation is produced as a consequence of the artificial frontiers established by the different states. In spite of these deformations it is also stated how the colective characterology of each people is such that it's impossible to ignore its existence. This affirmation is based on three concrete demonstrations:1) The first judgment of a person is always in function nof his place of origen.2) The present crisis of political ideologies demonstrates that there isno possible ideology without a previous knowledge of the psychology of thepeople.3) All definitions that have been made throughout history concerningwhat a "nation" is, have had to refer necessarily to that particular way ofthinking and acting that distinguishes one people from another. After all,they have had to speak about their collective character.The second part of the conference, based on a series of interviews published by Avui, is an analysis of the catalan character and the characteristics that really form it, forgetting the topics that often falsqy and mask it. Exactly the seven traits attributed by the majority of those interviewed to our way of being are analyzed as a reply to one of the questions in the interuiews: Which characteristics do you think better define the Catalan way of being?The basic idea that derives from this project is that it demostrates as absolute proof the existente of the catalan characterology. However it requires a systematic and deep investigation in order to reach an exact and objective knowledge of our way of being, that connects with our past, with our history, but at the aume time allows us to project ourselves more efficiently, as a nation, towards the future.
