This article summarises the presence of Basque merchant ships in the geographical area from the coasts of Galicia to the coast of Brittany between the 12th and 15th centuries. Trade with the Atlantic ports was vital throughout this period for the sailors, ship-owners and merchants of the peninsular coasts of the Basque Country.
The beginning was somewhat shy and the project failed on certain markets, but the sailors of Biscay and Guipúzcoa showed themselves capable of overcoming difficulties.
Artikulu honetan Galiziako kostaldetik Bretainiako itsasbazterreraino hedatzen den eremu geografikoan XII.
mendetik XV.era bitartean merkataritzan aritu ziren euskal itsasontzien presentziaren laburpen bat egiten da.
Garai horretan Atlantikoko portuekin egiten zen merkataritzak hil edo biziko garrantzia zuen euskal kostaldeko marinel, armadore eta merkatarientzat. Hasierak oso apalak izan ziren beti eta zenbait merkatutan atzera egin behar izan zuten, baina Bizkaiko eta Gipuzkoako marinelek zailtasunei aurre egiten bazekitela erakutsi zuten.
