    El Proyecto Hidroeléctrico Quijos, fue planteado inicialmente como un esquema escandinavo de �alta presión� excavado con tuneladora (TBM) bajo el basamento metamórfico. En la fase inicial, fue aceptada la propuesta de la adjudicataria de realizar la excavación convencional y subir la rasante de los túneles. A medida que avanzaban las excavaciones se evidenció la existencia de �paleovaguadas� de grandes proporciones, rellenas de materiales aluviales antiguos. Todos los frentes de excavación interceptaron dichas paleovaguadas y colapsaron o se tuvieron que paralizar. Se realizó una investigación geológica complementaria y una nueva interpretación del modelo geológico para buscar un trazado alternativo que viabilizará de nuevo la excavación de los túneles.

    The Quijos Hydroelectric Project was, initially, proposed as a Scandinavian pattern of �high pressure� excavated with tunnel boring machine (TBM)under the metamorphic basement. At the initial stage, it was accepted the proposal of the contractor to perform the conventional excavation with drilling and blasting and go up to slope of the tunnel. As the excavation of the tunnel progressed it confirmed the existence of �paleothalwegs � of major proportions, filled with ancient alluvial materials. All excavation faces intercepted these paleocauces and caused the collapse or had to be paralyzed. We carried out a complementary geological investigation and a new interpretation of the geological model in order to find an alternative alignment which it viable tunnels excavation.
