This article approaches the evolution of the concept of freedom of thought in José María Blanco White supported by the central reference of Letters from Spain. Such evolution is demonstrated from his earlier works published in Semanario Patriótico and El Español journal up to later works as Spain and Autobiography which correspond to the author’s maturity. Specifically, it shows his understanding of freedom of thought under the religious issue to the extent it presents a series of legal and political implications. Nowadays, such implications are considered interesting because of the reflection about the historical process of the Spanish legal system configuration in connection with freedom of religion and freedom of thought.
