En una carta de 1927 al escritor Enrique Espinoza (Samuel Glusberg), quien le había solicitado sus datos biográficos, José Carlos Mariátegui escribía, entre otras cosas: "soy un autodidacta [ . . . ] en Europa frecuenté algunos cursos libremente, pero sin decidirme nunca a perder mi carácter extra-universitario y tal vez si hasta anti-universitario". Esta colocación peculiar de Mariátegui, sin embargo, no había impedido, antes bien había tal vez favorecido, su interés precoz y agudo hacia los problemas de la reforma universitaria y de la escuela en general.

In a 1927 letter to the writer Enrique Espinoza (Samuel Glusberg), who had requested biographical data, José Carlos Mariátegui wrote, among other things: "I am a self-taught person [...] In Europe I freely frequented some courses, but without ever losing my extra-university character and even my anti-academic character". This particular placement of Mariátegui, however, had not prevented, but rather helped, his early and keen interest to the problems of university reform and school in general.
