Peter Loyson

  • This article describes the Greek derivations of some words and terminology in chemistry and explains the meanings of these terms. Often chemistry teachers and students are unaware of the exact meaning of these Greek-derived words, and therefore, having additional information available about the meaning of the Greek sources leads to a deeper understanding of these words. Topics addressed include: Greek prefixes and suffixes, leading to easy-to-understand Greek-derived words; Greek influences on the naming of some chemical elements; uses of Greek for naming chemical compounds and complexes; and applications and explanations of Greek-derived terms in inorganic, physical, analytical, and organic chemistry.
