Resumen de Poblamiento euroamericano al sur del río Cuarto

Desde las dos últimas décadas del siglo XVIII, la Frontera Sud y Sudeste de Córdoba estuvo localizada geográficamente en el espacio entre los ríos Cuarto y Quinto, comprendiendo villas, parajes, postas, estancias y pobladores desperdigados en su campaña, además de fuertes y fortines. En su mayor parte, este poblamiento se ubicó a orillas del río Cuarto y la villa homónima se convirtió en el siglo XIX en el centro más importante del sur cordobés; por ésto se la llamó Frontera del río Cuarto. La historiografía regional prestó escasa atención a los pobladores euroamericanos establecidos al sur de dicho cauce. Este trabajo se ocupa de estudiar las características del mismo, tratando de reconstruir esta parte de la historia fronteriza anterior a 1869, fecha en que se traslada la línea de fuertes y fortines al río Quinto.

Since the last two decades of the eighteenth century, the Southern-Southeastern Frontier of Córdoba consisted on an strip of land between the rivers Cuarto and Quinto, comprising villages, stopping places, post houses, ranches and population wide spread all over the countryside, besides a few forts and some fortalices. Since this settling took place mainly at the banks of the river Cuarto, during the nineteenth century the homonymous village became the most important center of Southern Córdoba. As a consequence, the whole area was called “The Frontier of Río Cuarto”. But regional historiography paid little heed to the Euro-American settlements established south of said watercourse. This work deals on the study of their characteristics, trying to reconstruct the history of the frontier area before 1869, date in which the line of forts and fortalices was moved to river Quinto.
