En las intersecciones cubano-haitianas del Circuncaribe diaspórico, híbrido y rebelde, se enmarca la figura histórica del cubano José Antonio Aponte y Ubarra (? � 1812) �pintor, afrodescendiente, liberto, héroe y mártir� acusado por las autoridades coloniales españolas de haber sido líder de una conspiración antiesclavista, encarcelado, interrogado y ejecutado en La Habana el 9 de abril de 1812. Este ensayo repasa la evolución de la consideración del personaje en la historiografía cubana contemporánea y analiza «el archivo de la represión»; documento legal de registro metaliterario que recoge la descripción pormenorizada del Libro de pinturas, hoy perdido, con interpretaciones correspondientes, suministradas por el propio Aponte en respuesta al inquisitivo interrogatorio del comisionado Nerey

In the Cuban-Haitian intersections of the diasporic Circum-Caribbean, hybrid and rebelious, emerges the historical figure of Cuban José Antonio Aponte y Ubarra (? � 1812) �painter, Afrodescendant, freed slave, hero, and martyr, acussed by the Spanish colonial authorities of being the leader of an antislavery conspiracy, imprisoned, interrogated, and executed in Havana on the 9th of April of 1812. This essay reviews the evolution of Aponte as a character in contemporary Cuban historiography and analyzes the «archive of repression»;
