  • NIS was designed by Sun Microsystems to allow multiple hosts to shared common databases such as /etc/passwd, /etc/group, /etc/hosts, /etc/services and /etc/rpc. Allowing multiple hosts to share the same information made updates to all hosts easy to achieve, since all maps were managed and distributed from a central source.
