El artículo recoge el panorama de un tipo especial de colecciones en Internet, desde la perspectiva de las instituciones y desde el punto de vista de las co-lecciones sin institución, algo habitual en la red. El método que sigue es fundamentalmente descriptivo, basado en una selección exhaustiva de todos los fondos de estas características existentes en España y fuera de nuestras fronteras. El objetivo planteado es el desgranar la multitud de colecciones que se ofertan, clasificándolas según las funciones que cumplen, así como los requisitos necesarios para ello. Así, en primer lugar se define el término "biblioteca digital". En segundo lugar se detallan las características distintivas de este tipo de colecciones. En tercero se describen sus funciones y requerimientos. Para, en último lugar, señalar algunos casos clave.

This article presents a general overview of special collections in the Internet. It shows two points of view: the institutional perspective and that of non- insti-tutional archives, something usual in the network. The method is mainly descriptive, based on an exhaustive selection of all these special collections cradle books- in Spain and in other countries. The main objective is to know the variety of collections, and classify them by their functions, and also to describe their necessary re-quirements. So, firstly the concept digital library is defined. Secondly, the special features of this type of collections are specified. Thirdly, their functions and requirements are described, to end up by showing some �successful cases
