La comprensión del yo y de la realidad requiere observar el desarrollo temprano del yo. El yo y la realidad no pueden ser considerados separadamente al desarrollarse juntos en estadios sucesivos de integración. La realidad no está afuera, sino contenida en el pre-yo del narcisismo primario y no es primariamente hostil al yo. La constitución psicológica del yo y la del mundo exterior van de la mano. Hay una diferenciación en ello-yo y los objetos desde el estado primario de unidad o identidad. La función sintética del yo integra los niveles cada vez más complejos de diferenciación para restablecer constantemente la unidad original. El conflicto edípico favorece la creciente diferenciación; el yo se defiende no contra la realidad, sino contra la pérdida de la unión libidinal con la madre, contra la que el padre interfiere en la situación edípica (castración paterna). El padre, es sostén contra la amenaza de absorción por el útero, y el niño intenta identificarse con él. La identificación primitiva con el padre y el miedo de la madre tragadora (castración materna), son componentes del complejo de Edipo, junto a la relación libidinal positiva con la madre y el miedo de castración del padre.

To understand the ego and reality requires the examination of early ego development. The ego and reality cannot be considered separately, as they develop together in successive stages of integration. Reality is not "outside", rather it is contained within the pre-ego of primary narcissism; neither is it primarily hostile to the ego. Psychological ego-formation and formation of the externa! world go hand in hand. There is ego-id and ego-object differentiation as far back as the primary unity or identity phase. The synthetic function of the ego incorporares increasingly complex levels of differentiation in arder to continually reinstate the original unity. The oedipal conflict contributes to the increasing differentiation; the ego defends itself not against reality, but against the loss of libidinal union with the mother, against that which the father interferes with in the oedipal situation (paternal castration). The child attempts to identify with the father, who is a support against the threat of absorption by the uterus. This early identification with the father and the fear of engulfment by the mother (maternal castration) are components of the Oedipus complex, together with the positive libidinal relationship with the mother and the fear of castration by the father.

La compréhension du Moi et de la réalité requiere d' observer le développement précoce du Moi. La compréhension du Moi et celle de la réalité ne peuvent etre considérées de façon séparée car ils se développent ensemble a u long de stades successifs d'intégration. La réalité n' est pas dehors mais contenue dans le pré-moi du narcissisme primaire et n' est pas primairement hostile au moi. La constitution psychologique du moi et du monde extérieur vont main dans la main. Il y a une différentiation en ça-moi et les objets partant de l'état primaire d'unité ou d'identité. La fonction synthétique du moi integre les niveaux chaque fois plus complexes de différentiation pour rétablir constamment l'unité originale. Le conflit oedipien favorise la différentiation croissante: le moi se défend non pas contre la réalité, mais contre la perte de l'union libidinale avec la mere, contre laquelle le pere interfere dans la situation oedipienne (castration paternelle). Le pere est un soutient contre la menace d' absortion par l'utérus et l'enfant tente de s'identifier a lui. L'identification primitive avec le pere et la peur de la mere avalante ( castration maternelle), sont des composantes du complexe d'CEdipe, avec la relation libidinale positive avec la mere et la peur de la castration du pere.
