  • Resumen
    • From altarpiece to table: for a history of rge vessel of Saint Nicolas de Port.

Preserved in the treasure of the basilica of Saint Nicolas de Port ever since the beginning of the 19th centruy, the vessel, work of the goldsmith Hans Rappolt, master active in Nuremberg beginning in 1579-1580, had until recently been considered to be an "ex-voto" given during the Renaissance by a cardinal from Lorraine to replace the medieval vessel of Saint Louis, offered by the Queen Marguerite of Provence for the return of the crusaders. Taking advantage of a recent restoration, research allowed as much by an improved material knowledge of the piece as by stylistic analysis have revealed the secular destination of the object, which is linked to the category of table vessels, precious objects used for wine or spices destined as much for the entertainment of the guests as for ornamenting the meals. Their use was particularly appreciated in Augsburg and in Nuremberg from the end of the 15th century to the beginning of the 17th century. The composition combined a partially gilded setting in silver and a nautilus equipped with wheels. The multiplicity and the refinement of the decoration, as well as the elaborate character of the scene represented demonstrates the exceptional value of this object, unique in France, comparable to the goldsmith vessels of the great European collections such as the Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden. Like the productions of Jörg Ruel and of Hans Anton Lind, Hans Rappolt's vessel reflects the virtuosity and the proficiency of the Nuremberg goldsmith, exacerbated by the circulation of "exotica" in Europe, creating objects worthy of figuring in the precious "Kunstkammern" of the period.
