Under the responsibility of the joung Spanish Society for Cell Biology, the 5th International Congress of Cell Biology took place in Madrid during the last week of July 1992, at a time when research in the field of Cell and Molecular Biology stands at a crossroads. On the one hand, never was so obvious that the potent technologies and methodologies now in the hands of the research community, could yield enormous rewards in terms of understanding so many still open questions in the organization and function of living organisms, understanding that immediately will have significant applications, possibly crucial for the future of the world and mankind; on the other hand, the complexity of biological systems and of the increasing costs of the new methodologies puts a burden on the future of biological research, that requires the maintenance of the commitment and support of science of around the world.
