Resumen de Looking Up

Bernadette A. Caldwell

  • ACS and this Journal are celebrating Earth Day, and the article “Teaching Chemistry Using October Sky” offers an entry to the topic. The Journal has published articles relating to rockets and rocket fuel specifically, and more generally to the chemistry of space. Some are from the same period of history following the launch of Sputnik discussed in the book and subsequent movie October Sky and in Goll and co-workers’ article.

Having mentors and sources of inspiration is an important dimension of teaching and learning chemistry and an aspect of public outreach. The Journal has also published articles that address the crucial role that chemists can play as inspiring teachers, researchers, and mentors. Some of the resources of JCE Online reflect both the many faces of chemistry and the myriad stories behind advances in the field. Students want and need to have people they can look up to: Consulting the links will help teachers provide students with science content and inspiring human stories.
