  • Resumen
    • The sculptures of the portal of the Pieve di San Giorgio in Argenta (Ferrara).

This article examines the parish church of San Giorgio in Argenta (Ferrare), its 11th century architecture, and the marble portal signed by Giovanni da Modigliana and dated "1121 or 1122". Particular attention is paid to analysis of the sculptor's eclectic personality, influenced by Wiligelmus (Modena Cathedral, San Benedetto Po in Polirone, San Silvestro in Nonantola) and by the tradition of the upper Adriatic Venetian lagoon (Torcello). The presence of the sculpted tympanum is also highlighted as linking the portal with Borgogna, the original context for this type of spalyed portal with sculpted tympanum, and demonstrates how in Italy this new foreign idea was adopted quite early and prior to Niccolo's interventions in the 1230s.
