Place and genius. Memory, ethics and planning in artistic production.
This contribution explores the link between artistic production and the specific identity of a territory from a historical perspective. After examining exemplary cases from the past, the study focuses on the question, can the way projects are designed today, the boundaries of which are now global, find new meaning in how they relate to the "genius loci"? While in ancient art the close bond between artist and environment was very strong, also due to the decisive contribution of craftsmanship, today, now that the centrality of the artisan has been lost, the influence of the local context seems to have become blurred. The cross-contamination of languages and the expanses of increasingly extensive research have however brought about a marked disconnect with the public of potential and more direct beneficiaries. In recovering the "spirit of the place" the capacity of art to enrich and expand new ethical horizons would also be acknowledged.
