  • Resumen
    • Maya motifs on the facade of the Casa Montejo, a palace constructed by Francisco Montejo the Younger in Mérida in the Yucatán peninsula in 1549, suggest inclusion rather than unilateral Iberian dominance, a visual dialectic that parallels the concurrent political situation. Yucatec artists and viewers approached the facade as not simply a monument to Spanish domination, but rather a statement on their public presence in the new political landscape, asserting continuity of and with their cultural referents. Indigenous Yucatec artists from the Xiu family of Mani, who supported Montejo, interwove pre-Columbian motifs into the sculptural program in order to link the Xiu family to the conquistador and add their presence to the public place of display.
