  • Resumen
    • In an article first published in French in the Cahiers de civilisation médiévale 48 (January–March 2005), the writer assesses the current state of the study of Italian Romanesque sculpture. Today, this field cannot be said to be marked by significant changes, and the prevailing ethos among Italian scholars might be described as conservative. Uninfluenced by the culture wars and postmodernism, they maintain a lively interest in such matters as authorship, style, and stylistic influence, particularly that from France. Long-entrenched positions are stoutly defended, although, too frequently, little new evidence is adduced. The increasingly frequent forays into such areas as patronage, pilgrimage, and liturgical furnishings are more promising, however. Nevertheless, it has been 50 years since a synthetic, monographic study of Italian Romanesque sculpture has been written. The writer goes on to examine some of these issues in detail.
