The writer offers a new interpretation of Duccio's Entry into Jerusalem, located on the back of the Maestà altarpiece for Siena Cathedral in Siena, Italy. She considers the meanings of two provocative motifs in this painting: the leafless tree directly above Christ's head, and the partially opened door in the wall in the lower right foreground. She reviews earlier interpretations of each motif and then proposes new interpretations. Examining how the tree and the door together provide a new reading for the panel, she argues that they link the earthly paradise in the form of the Garden of Eden with the heavenly paradise into which the blessed will eventually enter—again through a door.
