  • Resumen
    • A large-scale Passion cycle preserved in the Musée des beaux-arts, Reims, France, provides a revealing example of the interaction between painting and dramatic performance. The 9 panels of the Passion cycle form part of a group of 25 painted cloths produced between the mid-15th and early 16th centuries that were used as temporary ornamentation intended for particular ceremonial occasions. Rather than being connected directly and primarily to urban drama in the streets of Reims, the painted cycle can more plausibly be located within the spaces of a church and in relation to the performative practices therein. Through their painted events and ceremonial display, the cloths participated in the establishment of a ritual of Lent within the church of Reims. This ritual was defined in opposition to other ceremonies that took place during Holy Week and to an alternate performance of the Passion play organized by the municipal authorities.
