  • Medieval representations of Æthelthryth, the East Anglian princess who founded the monastery of Ely in 673, are examined. The writer presents a catalog of the material artifacts produced to honor this saint, which are listed in an appendix, in order to investigate these images as sites of medieval devotion. She addresses some of the significant images of the saint, and the social and religious conditions in which they were produced, before examining an illuminated miniature in depth to demonstrate how lay devotion may have influenced the visual materials of this cult.
