In Western societies, changes in the atmosphere and cyclical phenomena are seen as part of the vicissitudes of human life, but this is not so in Oceania. At Nasau in Fiji, for example, changes of this sort arouse emotions that reveal a particular kind of logic in which individual traits combine with relationships with the cosmos and with the ancestral spirits. This contrast also raises questions about issues relating to social change.
