  Polynesia has changed profoundly in the last two centuries, from a multitude of tiny island communities to a unified, macrocephalic and seemingly coherent whole. It has come to function as an interlocking system of central and peripheral areas that is still highly dependent on circumstances in mainland France and its territorial entities. The economic and financial difficulties affecting the centres are reactivating spatial lines of fracture between the different island groups.

  Au cours des deux derniers siècles, l’espace polynésien s’est profondément transformé, passant d’une multitude de petites collectivités insulaires indépendantes à un ensemble unifié, macrocéphale et apparemment cohérent. Ce système spatial fonctionne par emboîtements de centres et de périphéries et reste très dépendant des conjonctures métropolitaine et territoriale. Les difficultés économiques et financières que subissent les centres réactivent les lignes de fragilité spatiale entre les archipels.
