  • The article discusses a Dutch late medieval prayer nut ornately carved from boxwood once owned by the 17th-century Dutch aristocrat and art collector Joost van Cranevelt. The author examines a manuscript written by van Cranevelt in which he meticulously described the prayer nut. According to the author, the manuscript has made it possible to reconstruct the object's provenance and original meaning. In addition, the author argues that the manuscript can be considered an early document of proto-art history.
