  • Resumen
    • The article discusses the 1432 painted altarpiece “The Ghent altarpiece,” by Hubert and Jan van Eyck, and the quatrain inscribed on the outer frames of the altarpiece wings. The author describes the rediscovery of the quatrain in the 19th century by Norbert Cornelissen and Liévin de Bast in a manuscript by antiquarian collector Christophe van Huerne. Other topics include the attribution of the painting to both Herbert and Jan van Eyck rather than just Jan van Eyck due to the quatrain, the quatrain as referring only to the lower register of the altarpiece depicting “The adoration of the lamb,” and the chronology of the commission of the altarpiece in relation to Hubert van Eyeck's 1426 death. Also discussed is the structure of the quatrain including its leonine hexameter.
