  • Resumen
    • Because his son-in-law's biography of Adriaen van der Werff, one of the most celebrated painters of his time, contains little information about his clientele in Rotterdam, four letters written by Van der Werff with information about people he knew in his native city are a welcome addition to people's knowledge of him. Written to Jan Peter van Baurscheit, these four letters are all that remains of a more extensive correspondence. The interesting thing is not only that the letters mention statues and reliefs that Van Baurscheit produced for Van der Werff and others in Rotterdam, but also, in two of them, that Van der Werff speaks very candidly about Van Baurscheit's models. This provides a rare insight into the manner in which an artist could criticize a colleague's work around 1700. While it is impossible to identify any of the statues or models for certain, some of Van Baurscheit's surviving sculptures resemble ones mentioned in the letters.
