Resumen de The Iconography of Ridolfo Ghirlandaio's Altarino

Rick Scorza

  • The article discusses a portable altar or altarino painted in 1509-1515 by the Florentine artist Ridolfo Ghirlandaio owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, with particular focus given to the altarino's use of iconcography relating to the Virgin Mary and the Servite monastic order. A brief overview of the Servite order and its significance to Florentine history is offered, and the likelihood that the monk depicted in the work is Beato Filippo Benizi, the first Servite to be canonized, is explored.
