  • The article discusses research on organic patinas of small Italian Renaissance bronzes. The author describes black patinas used in Renaissance Italy by sculptors including Severo Calzetta da Ravenna and Niccolò Roccatagliata. The author discusses methods used for the detection of patina components, including resin, drying oil, and Burgundy pitch, and describes varnishes used in Renaissance Italy. Specific topics include the use of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to analyze bronzes, the study of bronzes by the circle of Giambologna, historical sources mentioning patina including those by authors Giorgio Vasari and Pomponius Gauricus, and Florentine red patina.
