  • The article discusses the work of the 16th Flemish artist Hans Bol. Particular focus is paid to Bol's working methods or techniques in various artistic genre including gouache, prints, and pen drawings. The author notes that Bol was primarily concerned with depictions of landscapes and townscapes, which he probably recorded on location at various sites across the Netherlands and the surrounding region including Amsterdam and The Hague. Also discussed are Bol's preferred themes, motifs, and compositions, which he employed in inventive variations in an oeuvre that amounted to about 1000 works.
