Ivan Městrovic's walnut wood panel Descent from the Cross (1913) has been rediscovered. The panel dates from a time when Městrovic was deepening his already well-established commitment to Southern Slav unity through engagement with the revitalized Byzantine Orthodox heritage of Serbia. As one of his first forays in the treatment of a religious subject and one of his first steps in the consistent exploration of the qualities of wood as a sculptural medium, it announces the thematic and stylistic shifts that typified the final phase of his early artistic maturity. Heretofore untraced since its exhibition in London in 1915, the panel had been acquired by expatriate American collector Mrs St George.
