The planet Mars managed to engage, at the end of the 19th century, both popular and elite science. From the issue of the “plurality of inhabited worlds” raised by Camille Flammarion to the famed rectilinear canals observed Giovanni Schiaparelli and Percival Lowell, affabulating Martian geography, the red planet constitutes a perfect case study in the sense that it both showcases the progress of astronomical knowledge, and links astronomy and fiction. Scientists are only too happy to appropriate the images and ideas diffused by literature while the “liveability conditions” of the planet will have their literary day in science fiction. Its study, far from being mere astronomer’s fancy, incites us to take a new look at the heavens at the end of a century heavy in ideologically charged scientific discoveries – the extrapolations inherent to the immensity of space, the rejection of helio-centrism, the extension of temporality...

La planète Mars a su concentrer, à la fin du XIXe siècle, savoirs savants et savoirs populaires. De la pluralité des mondes habités soulevée par Camille Flammarion aux fameux canaux rectilignes observés par Giovanni Schiaparelli et à Percival Lowell, fabulant la géographie martienne, la planète rouge constitue un cas d’école en un sens où elle met en scène les progrès des connaissances sur le ciel, liant astronomie et fiction. Les savants se réapproprient volontiers les images et les idées véhiculées par la littérature tandis que les « conditions d’habitabilité » de la planète Mars auront leur tribune littéraire dans des récits fantastiques. Loin d’être simple fantaisie d’astronome, son étude invite à poser un nouveau regard sur le ciel en une fin de siècle s’inscrivant dans le cadre de sciences idéologiquement chargées – extrapolations inhérentes aux immensités sidérales, rejet de l’héliocentrisme, extension de la temporalité...
