    Astronomy became popular long before Camille Flammarion’s celebrated works of popular science. Astronomical science must be understood by all, educated bourgeoisie or worldly elite, and in particular by the people. Its place within the disciplines taught and the professional or utilitarian publications that started to multiply at the beginning of the 19th century is original. The open class in popular astronomy given by François Arago at the Paris Observatory is very different from the course offered the Parisian working-class by Auguste Comte, but for both these social reformers, the observation and knowledge of the Heavens are thought to participate in the empowering of the people. As for the Christian philosophers, they see in astronomy a way to resist popular beliefs and superstitions while maintaining the social harmony – class hierarchies – that are God’s will

    L’astronomie devint populaire bien avant la célèbre oeuvre de vulgarisation de Camille Flammarion. La science astronomique doit être comprise par tous, bourgeois cultivés et mondains, et surtout par le peuple. Elle occupe une place originale parmi les enseignements et publications à visée professionnelle et utilitaire qui se multiplient dans le premier XIXe siècle. Le cours public d’astronomie populaire que donne François Arago à l’Observatoire est bien différent de celui qu’Auguste Comte fait aux ouvriers parisiens, mais pour ces deux réformateurs sociaux, l’observation et la connaissance du Ciel doivent participer à l’émancipation du peuple. Quant aux philanthropes chrétiens, ils voient dans l’astronomie un moyen de combattre les croyances et superstitions populaires tout en maintenant l’harmonie sociale – hiérarchie des classes – voulue par Dieu
