Resumen de A Raphael riddle resolved

Louis Alexander Waldman

  • Part of a special section on Raphael on the occasion of “Raphael: From Urbino to Rome,” an exhibition at the National Gallery, London, through January 16, 2005. The proliferation of Raphaels in Florence around 1500 may have caused a case of mistaken identity involving the most famous Raphael, Raffaello di Giovanni Sanzio d'Urbino. In this case of mistaken identity, Raffaello di Giovanni, an artist mentioned in a series of payments relating to the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy, was identified as Raphael of Urbino. There is, however, good reason to believe that new documents detailing these payments do not concern Raphael of Urbino, but the one Florentine painter named Raffaello di Giovanni who is known to have been active in the city at that period: Raffaello di Giovanni Riccomanni.
