Resumen de New documents for Raphael and his patrons in Perugia

Donal Cooper

  • Part of a special section on Raphael on the occasion of “Raphael: From Urbino to Rome,” an exhibition at the National Gallery, London, through January 16, 2005. The writer discusses new documents that evidence the activities of Raphael and his patrons in Perugia, Italy. On the basis of these documents, which include papers relating to the heirs of Guido di Carlo degli Oddi, for whom Raphael's Coronation of the Virgin was produced, the writer proposes that Raphael was primarily based in Perugia at least from the beginning of 1503 to early 1504. He contends that the consolidation of the artist's activities in that city in 1504 has a number of implications, including that of strengthening the case for Raphael painting the Marriage of the Virgin, dated 1504, in Perugia rather than Città di Castello.
