  • Resumen
    • The writer discusses Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex, England. This 15th-century building is among the most magnificent late-medieval castles to survive anywhere in Europe, but although it is an acknowledged architectural masterpiece, it has never received the individual attention it deserves; in 1777, the heart of this great residence was ripped out, and in the early 20th century the ruins were converted into a country house. Nevertheless, even in its damaged state, Herstmonceux remains a hugely important survival, testifying to the sophistication and ambition of domestic architecture at the Lancastrian court. What the castle and its few fragmentary peers illustrate is that the Tudor and Elizabethan building booms were, to a quite startling extent, fundamentally extensions of a medieval English domestic tradition of architecture.
