  • Resumen
    • Photographs of Jane Morris that Dante Gabriel Rossetti commissioned from John Robert Parsons are discussed. In summer 1865, Rossetti commissioned Parsons to take the photographs of Morris, who would become the painter's most frequent model. Rossetti selected the furniture and backgrounds for the photographs, and arranged Morris's poses, though she appears to have selected the quite conventional, long, full silk dress in almost all of them. An examination of the paintings by Rossetti that are closest to the photographs seems to suggest that none was painted solely or directly from the photographs, and that they were meant as reference material. These extraordinary photographs prove that the statuesque Morris, who has become a feminist icon in recent decades, really was a “stunner” in the flesh, and not merely as a result of Rossetti's transformative imagination.
