Resumen de The Courtauld Gallery's Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine: A Link between Navarrete and Schiavone

Zahira Véliz

  • An unusual 17th-century inscription that appears on a drawing of the Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine in the Courtauld Gallery, London, suggests a previously unrecognized connection between the productions of the Dalmatian painter Andrea Meldolla, called Schiavone (c. 1510–1563), and the Spanish deaf-mute painter Jan Fernandez Navarrete, called El Mudo (c. 1538–79). The drawing was recently assigned to the circle of Schiavone, and while it shows strong visual analogies with his work, the uniquely worded inscription, de mano de el mudo (“by the hand of the mute”), attributes the sheet to Navarrete. This intriguing work thus reflects a direct response to Italian sources and exemplifies the use of prints by Spanish artists as a way to exploit Italian art.
