  • Resumen
    • The writer examines a previously unknown woodcut design by Tobias Stimmer. Among the holdings of the Graphische Sammlung of the Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie in Dessau, Germany, is a particularly noteworthy group of drawings by Stimmer, to which can now be added another drawing from the albums, currently cataloged as anonymous 16th-century German: Stimmer's preparatory drawing for one of his woodcut illustrations for the German edition of Flavius Josephus's Antiquities of the Jews, printed in Strasbourg in 1574. The Dessau drawing's close similarity to the woodcut may explain why it has not previously been recognized as by Stimmer, but its abundant hatching and crosshatching, the consistent width of the pen lines, and the tendency to delineate clear planes and surfaces all anticipate the drawing's eventual purpose as a woodcut design. The writer examines the design in detail.
