Resumen de The Atlas Blaeu-van der Hem of the Austrian National Library

Stijn Alsteens

  • A review of the recently completed six-volume descriptive catalog of the Atlas Van der Hem , or Blaeu-Van der Hem, a bound collection of maps and topographical prints and drawings brought together by the Amsterdam lawyer Laurens van der Hem that represents one of the most impressive of the few surviving 17th-century assemblages of works on paper. The catalog, by Erlend de Groot and Peter van der Krogt, is the result of a project started in 1996, and both the authors and the publishers should be commended for having undertaken this enormous task. Nevertheless, the publication is not without its faults, with its major shortcoming being its unreliability concerning the attribution of many of the drawings. The writer goes on to present his remarks on the catalog, providing an attribution for each drawing as well as a short form of their title.
