  • Resumen
    • An analysis of the early, Rembrandtesque drawings of the painter, draftsman, and occasional printmaker Gerbrand van den Eeckhout. While no documentary evidence exists to indicate that Van den Eeckhout served an apprenticeship with Rembrandt, Arnold Houbraken mentions that Van den Eeckhout was a pupil at Rembrandt's studio, and the style of his earliest paintings (1641 or 1642) points to a close relationship with Rembrandt before that period. This article focuses on drawings by Van den Eeckhout that can be dated on stylistic grounds to the latter half of the 1630s, when he was working in Rembrandt's studio, which he probably entered soon after May 1635. Some of the selected drawings have been linked with Van den Eeckhout for some time, while other have only been attributed to him recently. Many of the drawings, which include biblical subjects as well as depictions of actors and women in costumes, were previously thought to be by Rembrandt and closely reflect his style.
