  • The article discusses the painting "Marius meditating among the ruins of Carthage" by the Italian painter Salvator Rosa. The author traces the provenance of the painting, confirms its original title, and dates the work to circa 1649 on stylistic grounds. Before the author's rediscovery of the painting at a Rosa exhibition held in Naples, Italy in 2008 the work had been known by various different titles including "Philosopher contemplating the ruins of a town" and "Philosopher meditating."
