  • The article discusses the X-radiography of the 1823 painting “Portrait of Ramón Satué,” by Francisco Goya, revealing an underlying composition. The authors describe Goya's practice of re-using canvases and discusses analysis of the “Portrait of Ramón Satué” using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry. The authors compare the underlying portrait to Goya's 1810 portrait of General Nicolas Guye and describe insignia in the portrait, which the authors suggest depicts an army officer.
