Antony Peck, Heather Griffiths
The writer draws attention to a previously unrecorded painting by Emil Nolde at Harewood House in Yorkshire, England. So far overlooked in the literature on the artist, this striking watercolor portrait depicts Hermann Probst, a Sanskrit scholar and an expert on Eastern religions. As Probst was born in 1886, the work belongs to some time around World War I, a date in keeping with Nolde's watercolor style at that time and with Probst's youthful appearance. The writer goes on to outline how the work came to be at Harewood as part of a collection assembled by the 7th Earl and Countess of Harewood.
