Resumen de Three street drawings by Gustave Caillebotte

Malcolm Park

  • A paper investigation the locale for three drawings of a street in Paris, executed by Gustave Caillebotte. Although the drawings are not preparatory to any known painting, scholars have related them indirectly to Caillebotte's famous depiction of the urban renewal of Paris, Rue de Paris; temps de pluie (1877), and have given them the same date. This paper identifies the locale for the drawings as the rue de Madrid and the receding rue de Lisbonne, a site some 200 meters away from Caillebotte's home that he may have selected for the exercise in perspectival construction with which it presented him. However, taking into account the evident perspectival problems of the drawings, as well as the chronology of Caillebotte's paintings, the author argues that these pieces should be considered preparatory studies for an early street painting that was either not painter or was destroyed, and that should be dated no later than 1875.
